About Baker Graphene

James Baker

At Baker Graphene, our mission is to empower businesses through innovative consulting solutions centred around products and applications leveraging graphene and other related 2D and Advanced Materials.. We are dedicated to guiding our clients towards sustainable growth and success in their respective industries.


With over 25 years experience in the defence, aerospace and security markets leading and managing high technology businesses including BAE Systems where he was the lead for the Advanced Technology Centres (ATC's) in the UK. This was followed by over 11 years at The University of Manchester, where as the CEO for Graphene@Manchester he was responsible for the development and delivery of the business strategy and commercialisation opportunities for graphene and 2D materials in collaboration with business. This included the establishment and leadership of the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) in Manchester and the developing ecosystem of businesses now achieving real scale-up and growth.


Strategic thinker and experience in delivering in complex challenging and changing business environments. Experience in technology, innovation and supply-chain, working in partnership and collaborative relationships. Promoter of Open innovation and importance of skills and STEM agenda through various representative roles and media activities.

Nicki Baker

Nicki has been an integral part of various initiatives, working closely with organisations to enhance their operational efficiency and achieve their goals. Her expertise in project management, data analysis, and strategic planning has been instrumental in driving success for numerous projects.


Throughout her career which has included various project and commercial roles in large organisations like BAE Systems as well as supporting charities and start-ups in the graphene ecosystem. 


Nicki has shown a keen interest in fostering collaboration and innovation. She has been involved in several key projects, including the Trust Impact initiative, where she played a crucial role in managing client relationships and ensuring the successful delivery of project outcomes and also with Graphene Innovations Manchester, a new start-up developed through the Manchester graphene ecosystem.


Nicki's ability to navigate complex challenges and her dedication to continuous improvement have earned her a reputation as a reliable and effective leader. Her work has not only contributed to the growth and success of the organisations she has been a part of but also positively impacted the communities they serve.


In addition to her professional achievements, Nicki is known for her proactive approach and her willingness to go the extra mile to support her colleagues and clients. Her collaborative spirit and strong work ethic make her a valued member of any team.
